Finding Peace and Quiet for our reactive dog at Hansel and Gretel House in the Woods

Updated: Apr 11, 2024

Log Cabin

I booked this for Hans brithday a couple of years ago and we took Mac with us as a much needed rest from daily life. It's one of my absolute favourite places we have ever stayed and we made a tonne of memories that I will cherish forever with Mac. Nestled in a beautiful woodland with a fishing lake in the centre this enchanting property offers a tranquil retreat for those wanting a break from the day to day.

Just 11 kilometers from the historic Chillington Hall, Hansel and Gretel House in the Woods boasts makes you feel like you have your very own enchanted cabin in the woods. Beautiful lake views, a terrace, and barbecue facilities make this perfect for al fresco dining and outdoor chilling. Parking next to the cabin and you can explore the estate both walking or with the bike provided.

Inside you'll find a cozy interior designed for comfort and luxury. A well-equipped kitchen, complete with a fridge and toaster and any utensil you'd ever need is perfect for cooking up some campfire favourites.

Whether you're planning a romantic getaway, or a peaceful solo escape, Hansel and Gretel House in the Woods is a brilliant place to stay, especially if you have a reactive dog.

We had a welcome basket and a cozy fire on arrival, and our host met us to make sure everything was okay. If you have a people reactive dog I would message ahead to make sure you can do self check in.

Is this Airbnb suitable for Reactive Dogs?

We think so yes BUT there will have to be some management of your dog. Don't book here expecting to let your dog run free as the garden is not secure. But, if you are willing to keep a long line on your dog - just incase, this place would probably work for you. (It worked for Mac which was a rarity!)

Pros for Reactive Dogs

Cons for Reactive Dogs

Luxury Cabin and Comfortable Bed for people - I honestly had the best nights sleep ever.

This property does not have a secure garden so you will need to use a long line/leash if your dog doesn't have solid recall.

Scenic, private circular walks on your door step.

Noise Sensitivity: We heard some nearby gunshots which some of our furry pals are more sensitve to than others.

National Trust walks for Reactive Dogs close by (you know we love the NT!)

There are people fishing on the lake - so be wary of dogs.

A thoughtful welcome basket upon arrival, filled with treats and essentials to make you feel right at home.

Remote Location - The house is very remote so come stocked up with snacks!

Other things to note for reactive dogs:

  • There is direct access to the lake from the property

  • You have access to a small boat which you can do out on the lake on! We took Mac and it was a bit wobbly but he got the concept eventually!

  • It gets very dark - and outside lighting is limited.

  • The road around the estate is very muddy and bumpy - so drive slowly.

Our Rating - 👹👹👹👹/👹👹👹👹👹

One of our favourite stays, but probably won't work for everyone as there is not a secure garden, and there are gunshots nearby - make sure you pack a long line!

Reactivity rating: 👹👹👹👹/👹👹👹👹👹 (4/5)

The Cabin itself is really cosy and quiet but there are birds and other users on the lake. Because of the lack of secure garden we've also dropped it a point.

People Points: 👹👹👹👹👹/👹👹👹👹👹 (5/5)

Honestly? It was SO quiet. We had a welcome basket on arrival, great communication from the host and the added bonus of things like a comfy bed, beautiful setting, fireplace, bikes and boat are just incredible touches.

Scenery Score: 👹👹👹👹👹/👹👹👹👹👹 (5/5)

Beautiful scenery - a serene lake surrounded by forests and small openings for fishing. Could you ask for anything more? It's deep in the Shropshire countryside too - so lots of good walks close by.

Accessibility Scale: 👹👹/👹👹👹👹👹 (2/5)

The property is in the middle of nowhere so you would have to drive and park. Parking is outside the cabin, but its a circular mud road round the outside of the lake which can get very muddy so wouldn't be the most accessible place in the world.

Canine Courtesy Count: 👹👹👹👹/👹👹👹👹👹 (4/5)

We saw a VERY limited amount of dogs. Those we did see were close by their owners and we only saw them when we were walking round the mud road around the lake as the dogs were with the fisherman - so we're dropping a point just in case.
